Preamble

The American University of Global Peace (AUGP) is established as a visionary global think tank and international community of scholars, dedicated to research, postgraduate training, and the dissemination of knowledge in fields such as sustainable development, humanities, law, theology, philosophy, and peace studies. Founded in 1990 and revised in 2020 to reflect contemporary global imperatives, this Charter reaffirms AUGP’s commitment to fostering peace, equity, and human flourishing through interdisciplinary inquiry and collaborative action.


ARTICLE I: Purposes

The American University of Global Peace shall be a Global Think Tank and an international community of scholars, engaged in research, postgraduate training, and dissemination of knowledge, especially in Sustainable Development, Humanities, Law, Theology, Philosophy, and Peace Studies.

The research programmes of the institution shall include, among other subjects, coexistence between peoples having different cultures, languages, and social systems; peaceful relations between States and the maintenance of peace and security; human rights; economic and social change and development; the environment and the proper use of resources; basic scientific research and the application of the results of science and technology in the interests of development; and universal human values related to the improvement of the quality of life.It shall have as a central objective of its research and training centres and programmes the continuing growth of vigorous academic and scientific communities everywhere and particularly in the developing countries, devoted to their vital needs in the fields of learning and research within the framework of the aims assigned to those centres and programmes in the present Charter.

The Institution, which will operate with affiliation to several accredited Universities worldwide, aims to promote research and education for the benefit of humanity in all fields useful to people through:(a) Encouraging educational & research programs, seminars, and conferences worldwide;(b) Affiliation & collaboration with educational institutions & academic persons in other countries;(c) To conduct lectures, seminars, and other educational programmes and to publish information and educational material with a view to promoting the well-being of all humans;(g) To utilize and harness nature and natural resources for developing the culture, education, and the health of mankind;(h) To do all such other acts and things as are conducive or incidental to the attainment of the aforesaid objects.(i) To foster diversity, equity, and inclusion in all educational and research activities, ensuring equitable access to knowledge for underrepresented groups, including women, indigenous peoples, and marginalized communities, in alignment with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.


ARTICLE II: Organization

The American University of Global Peace shall consist of:(a) A Board of Governors, composed of at least 6 members with expertise in education, peace studies, and global affairs, serving staggered 5-year terms renewable once, ensuring at least 40% representation from underrepresented regions and genders. The Board shall serve as the governing board of the Institution. (b) A Chairman, elected by the Board for a 5-year term, who shall be responsible to the Council for the direction, administration, programming, and coordination.(c) A Chancellor, Regional Rectors, and Faculty of qualified scholars from all over the world, with the Chancellor serving a 5-year renewable term and faculty appointed based on peer-reviewed credentials and commitment to the University’s mission.(d) The research and training centres and diverse programmes.


ARTICLE III: Location

As a worldwide system of research and training centres and programmes, AUGP will have its location at the site of each centre or programme and also operate as an international multi-campus university.AUGP shall have its branches and learning centres worldwide and also operate as a global digital virtual campus.

All physical and digital operations shall prioritize secure, accessible platforms compliant with international standards such as WCAG 2.1 for web accessibility and data protection regulations like GDPR or equivalent.


ARTICLE IV: Status and Authority

AUGP may acquire and dispose of real and personal property, and may take other legal actions necessary to the performance of its functions.It may enter into agreements, contracts, or arrangements with governments, organizations, institutions, firms, or individuals for the purpose of carrying out its activities and may grant affiliated status to institutions meeting with its approved standards.

The decisions are made by a majority vote of the Council. Board of Governors Resolutions will be ratified with the final authority of Rector Cum President. In case of equal numbers of Votes in the Board of Governors then the Rector Cum President will have the right to use His privilege with one additional vote to take a final decision.

The University shall maintain accreditation from recognised international bodies and ensure annual financial audits are publicly available to uphold transparency and accountability.

This American University Charter has been endorsed and issued by those International IGOs and INGOs affiliated to AUGP USA from all over the world.


ARTICLE V: Research-based Awards

The University is hereby empowered to confer awards, certificates, and other distinctions at the graduate, post-graduate level to and on persons who shall have pursued a course of study approved by the University and have passed the tests prescribed by the University.

All awards shall be conferred following rigorous, peer-reviewed assessments aligned with the Bologna Process or equivalent international frameworks, ensuring portability and recognition worldwide.


ARTICLE VI: Financial Resources and Sustainability

The University shall secure funding through endowments, grants, tuition, and partnerships, with all revenues managed transparently via audited financial statements. It commits to sustainable practices in operations, including carbon-neutral campuses where feasible, and integrating environmental stewardship into curricula to advance global peace through ecological balance.


ARTICLE VII: Ethical Standards and Intellectual Property

All activities shall adhere to ethical guidelines, including those from the Declaration of Helsinki for research involving humans and principles of academic integrity. Intellectual property generated by the University shall be managed to benefit humanity, with open-access policies encouraged for non-commercial outputs.


ARTICLE VIII: Amendments

This Charter may be amended by a two-thirds majority vote of the Board of Governors, following a 60-day notice period for review by stakeholders, including faculty and affiliated institutions. Amendments shall not alter the core purposes in Article I without unanimous consent.


ARTICLE IX: Dispute Resolution

Disputes arising under this Charter shall be resolved through mediation by a neutral panel appointed by the Board, escalating to arbitration under rules of the International Chamber of Commerce if unresolved, prioritizing amicable and culturally sensitive outcomes.


Ratification

This Revised Charter of the American University of Global Peace was unanimously approved and ratified by the Board of Governors on November 6, 2020, superseding the Charter of 1990 while preserving its foundational principles. It reflects AUGP’s evolving commitment to global peace education in an interconnected world.
